The first case under article 230.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation brought to court

On April 10, 2018, the coach of the State-financed organisation of the Moscow region “Sports School Olympic Institution on cycling” Ilya Gorodnichev, in order to improve the athletic performance of an athlete and without informing the athlete, under the pretext of administering vitamin “C” into athlete’s body, intentionally made an intramuscular injection of “Eralfon”, which acting substance is "Epoetin alfa" (EPO). According to the results of the athlete’s analysis, recombinant erythropoietin was detected.

On February 18, 2019, a criminal case was opened against the coach on the grounds of a crime under Art. 230.2 of the Criminal Code (use of substances prohibited for use in sports with regard to an athlete irrespective of his consent, except cases where the use of prohibited substances and (or) methods is not an anti-doping rules violation in accordance with Russian legislation on physical culture and sports).

Ilya Gorodnichev has fully admitted the guilt, repaid the victim’s harm and apologized.

The criminal case has been dismissed, a criminal-law measure has been imposed in the form of a fine in the amount of 50,000 rubles.​
