RUSADA Does Not Recommend Dietary Supplements and Warns of Risks

RUSADA has identified and confirmed the presence of the prohibited substance SARMS LGD-4033 (ligandrol) — classified under S1.2 “Other Anabolic Agents” on the Prohibited List — in the dietary supplement “L-Carnitine” manufactured by Genetic Lab Nutrition. This substance was not declared on the product label.

A WADA-accredited anti-doping laboratory analyzed both opened and sealed packages of “L-Carnitine” from different batches and detected the prohibited substance at concentrations of 530 μg/mL and 10 ng/mL, respectively.

Additionally, during the investigation, RUSADA analyzed another product from the same manufacturer — the dietary supplement “Pro BCAA”. Ligandrol was detected in an opened package at a concentration of 260 μg/g, while no prohibited substance was found in a sealed package from the same batch.

Despite evidence proving that the anti-doping rule violation was unintentional, the athlete was sanctioned with a 1-year period of ineligibility, in accordance with Article 12.6.1.2 of the RUSADA Anti-Doping Rules*.

RUSADA reminds you: Dietary supplements carry risk!

Even years of safe use of the same product do not guarantee protection against contamination, falsification, or counterfeiting. If an athlete chooses to use supplements — despite RUSADA’s recommendation against it — please follow these precautions:

  •  Carefully review the supplement’s ingredient list and verify every component using list.rusada.ru.
  •  Avoid products with aggressive marketing or packaging that appears altered or suspicious.
  • Consider purchasing two packages from the same batch and storing 2–3 capsules or a small amount of powder — this may allow for product testing if an adverse analytical finding occurs.
  • Always consult a sports medicine specialist before using any supplement.

Remember: The athlete is ultimately and solely responsible for everything that enters their body.

*Article 12.6.1.2 of the All Russian Anti-Doping Rules:

Contaminated Products.
In cases where an athlete or other person can prove No Significant Fault or Negligence, and the prohibited substance (other than a substance of abuse) was ingested via a contaminated product, the maximum sanction shall be two years’ ineligibility, and the minimum — a reprimand without a period of ineligibility — depending on the degree of fault.
