Anti–doping knowledge base: In-Competition and Out-of-Competition testing - what is the difference?

04.03
2025

Testing is an essential part of the doping control process, which includes planning, sampling, transportation, and analyzing samples. There are two types of tests: In-Competition and Out-of-Competition, each with different analyses performed on the collected samples.

The competitive period for athletes starts at 23:59 the day before the tournament they are scheduled to compete in, and ends after the event and related sampling. A sample collected during this period is considered an In-Competition sample.

All other testing is referred to as Out-of-Competition.

Note that if an athlete consumes a substance prohibited In-Competition period but not Out-of-Competition, its detection in In-Competition sample could lead to unfavorable results.
