Risk of contamination of dietary supplements

29.05
2024

A study conducted at the Department of Sports Medicine at the Russian University of Sport "GTSOLIFK" found that between 10% and 58% of dietary supplements can be contaminated with prohibited substances in sports. Anabolic androgenic steroids and stimulants are the most commonly found.

Athletes often use dietary supplements, but some may not be aware that they are being falsified. The authors of "The Prevalence of Adulteration in Dietary Supplements Popular Among Athletes" research emphasize that products may contain unlisted or illegal substances due to unethical manufacturing and marketing practices.

It's important for athletes to be aware of the potential risks of positive doping tests due to contaminated supplements. Remember the principle of "strict liability": the athlete is responsible for what enters their body.

Be careful and carefully consider your choice of supplements to protect your career, reputation, and health!

RUSADA does not offer advice on dietary supplements or recommend their use.
