Donation of blood or blood components is not prohibited: The 2025 Prohibited List

2024

In early 2024, RUSADA submitted proposals to WADA regarding the exclusion of certain types of donations from the Prohibited List. We are delighted to announce that our proposal has been taken into consideration. Donations are a significant practice that reflects the noble intentions of athletes to support others.

From January 1st, 2025 onwards, donations of blood or blood components, such as plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, or peripheral blood stem cells, including those obtained through apheresis procedures, will not be prohibited if they are carried out at a donor center accredited by the relevant regulatory body of the country where it operates.

Currently, whole blood donations are permitted, as well as blood plasma obtained through plasmapheresis and surgical bone marrow donations. However, the donation of peripheral blood stem cells and platelet donations (thrombocytopheresis) are still prohibited.

As it will be from January 1, 2025:

  • Whole blood donation is not prohibited.
  • Blood plasma donation by plasmapheresis is not prohibited.
  • Surgical bone marrow donation is not prohibited.
  • Donation of peripheral blood stem cells is not prohibited.
  • Platelet donation (thrombocytopheresis) is not prohibited.

The Prohibited List will take effect on January 1, 2025. You can find the 2025 Prohibited List and an overview of the main changes on the RUSADA website.
